Before you begin
Decide whether you are adding storage for files and games or replacing the drive that starts Windows. Adding a second drive does not automatically move Windows or make applications use the new space. Replacing the system drive requires a supported clone or a planned Windows installation.
Identify the motherboard, available slots, existing drive and intended replacement. Check interface, physical length, mounting position and any lane-sharing restrictions. An M.2 Wi-Fi socket is not interchangeable with a storage socket, and an M.2 SATA drive may not work in an NVMe-only slot. A connector that looks similar is not enough.
Back up first. Formatting and cloning can erase the chosen destination. Legacy Intel Optane, RAID or AMD StoreMI systems need a configuration-specific migration plan before drives or controller settings are changed.
Work through the checks
-
Plan the transfer
For a system-drive replacement, decide between cloning and a clean installation. Confirm that the cloning tool supports the source, destination and encryption arrangement. Check the destination capacity against the actual data and partition requirements. Never rely solely on a clone as your backup. Label the source and target clearly, because reversing them in a cloning tool can overwrite the working installation.
-
Prepare for physical installation
Shut down, switch off the PSU and unplug mains power. Work on a stable surface using antistatic precautions. Consult the case and motherboard instructions before removing panels or heatsinks. Retain screws and standoffs safely. If a GPU blocks the storage slot and you are not comfortable removing it, ask support instead of working blindly underneath it.
-
Fit the appropriate drive
For an M.2 SSD, hold the edges, align the keyed connector and insert at the angle specified by the board instructions. Lower it onto the correct standoff and secure the screw or latch without bending the board. If fitting a heatsink, follow the thermal-pad instructions. For a SATA drive, use a suitable mounting point, a SATA data cable and the correct PSU power connection.
-
Confirm detection before using it
After reassembly, check firmware and Windows for the drive’s actual model and capacity. Do not assume a failed detection means the SSD is dead: slot compatibility and shared-port rules can matter. If an old drive unexpectedly disappears after adding a new one, check the motherboard manual’s lane-sharing notes before changing partitions or reinstalling Windows.
-
Prepare a new empty data drive
Only after confirming that the drive is new and has no needed data, use Disk Management to initialise it if required. GPT is the usual choice for a modern Windows PC. Create a New Simple Volume in the intended unallocated space, assign an unused letter and choose an appropriate file system such as NTFS for Windows game storage. Review the selected disk before confirming any format.
-
Use and maintain the storage
Choose the new library location in the game launcher or use its supported move function; dragging installed program folders can break them. Keep enough free space for updates and your workload. Windows’ Optimize Drives tool applies the appropriate optimisation to the drive type, including SSD trimming. Do not use an old third-party HDD defragmentation routine as a regular SSD “speed fix”.
What the results tell you
New drive is detected but absent in Explorer
It may not yet have a usable volume or drive letter. Confirm it is the new empty drive before preparing it.
The old Windows drive no longer boots
Check boot selection and the migration plan. Do not erase the source until the new system and files have been verified.
Optane or StoreMI is present
Stop generic migration steps and identify the exact version and layout. Removing an acceleration or tiering component can make a volume inaccessible.
Common questions
Will an SSD guarantee higher FPS?
It usually improves loading and responsiveness. Some games depend heavily on fast asset streaming, but an SSD is not a substitute for the GPU or CPU needed for your target settings.
Can I format a drive that suddenly became RAW?
Not if you want its old files back. That is a data-recovery situation, not new-drive preparation.
Should I peel the label off an SSD?
Follow the SSD and heatsink manufacturers’ instructions. Do not remove labels or components based on a generic diagram.
When to contact ElitePCS
Contact us with the motherboard model, existing storage layout and intended SSD before buying or moving hardware if compatibility is unclear. Tell us whether you need Windows and existing files transferred.
Contact ElitePCS support. Include your order number, the exact symptom and the checks you have completed. Keep passwords, licence keys and recovery keys out of screenshots.
