Before you begin
RAM is working memory used by Windows and applications. It is separate from SSD capacity and a graphics card’s VRAM. Before adding memory, identify the motherboard, CPU, existing kit and required DDR generation. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable, even when their capacities look similar.
Record the exact kit model from your order or module labels, not only “16 GB RAM”. Desktop DIMMs, laptop SO-DIMMs and server memory have different compatibility requirements. Use the motherboard specification and qualified-memory information alongside the processor’s limits. Matching capacity alone is not enough.
Do not use nail-polish remover, acetone, household cleaners or an eraser on memory contacts. A routine reseat does not require solvent cleaning. Handle modules by their edges and keep mains power disconnected during internal work.
Work through the checks
-
Check whether capacity is the problem
Use Task Manager while running the normal workload and compare installed memory with how much is being used. High usage can help explain paging and slow switching between apps, but buying more RAM will not fix every low-FPS problem. Check the recommended requirements of your actual games and applications. Choose a compatible matched kit rather than assuming unrelated modules will work together at their advertised speed.
-
Use the correct slots
Read the motherboard manual’s recommended population order. On many four-slot boards a two-module kit uses A2 and B2, but the manual for your exact board is the authority. Do not call the slot closest to the CPU “slot 1” and assume that describes every layout. Photograph the original configuration before removing anything.
-
Reseat only when appropriate
Shut down, switch the PSU off, unplug mains and wait for standby lights to go out. Use antistatic precautions. Open the slot’s movable latch or latches, hold the module by its edges and lift it evenly. Align the notch when refitting. Press evenly according to the board instructions until fully seated; some slots have only one movable latch. Stop if the key does not align or force seems excessive.
-
Allow the first startup to finish
After a memory change, the motherboard may perform memory training and take longer than a normal boot. Follow its documented behaviour rather than rapidly cycling the power. If it does not complete, record diagnostic lights or beep codes. A newly enabled XMP or EXPO profile is also a configuration change; test at the supported default when investigating instability, with support if needed.
-
Run a memory diagnostic
Save your work before starting a diagnostic that restarts the PC. Windows Memory Diagnostic is a useful initial check; specialist tools may provide additional testing. Record the tool, test duration, configuration and exact error. Do not dismiss an error simply because the PC otherwise seems usable. Equally, one clean short run does not rule out every intermittent memory problem.
-
Isolate carefully with support
If testing individual modules is needed, label them and use the manual’s recommended single-module slot. Change one variable at a time with power disconnected. Record each module/slot result in a small table. A failing combination can involve a module, slot, settings, CPU memory controller or board. Avoid declaring one component faulty solely because a single arrangement did not boot.
What the results tell you
Only part of the installed capacity appears
Compare firmware and Windows reporting, reseating, slot placement and hardware-reserved memory. Confirm the actual installed modules.
Errors only with a tuned memory profile
The profile or combination may be unstable. Test a supported default before concluding that a module is defective.
Each module works alone but not together
Check kit compatibility, population order and settings. Separate kits with similar labels are not guaranteed to behave as a tested pair.
Common questions
Is more RAM always faster?
More capacity helps when a workload is short of memory. It does not automatically increase performance once enough capacity is available.
Why does a utility report a different speed?
Some tools report a memory clock and others the effective data rate. Check the units before concluding that the RAM is running at half its expected performance.
Can I use any spare DIMM slot?
Use the board’s specified slot order and capacity rules. A physically empty slot is not permission to mix incompatible memory.
When to contact ElitePCS
Send the motherboard and CPU models, kit part numbers, slot arrangement and exact diagnostic result. A clear photo of the labels and populated slots helps us assess compatibility.
Contact ElitePCS support. Include your order number, the exact symptom and the checks you have completed. Keep passwords, licence keys and recovery keys out of screenshots.
