Before you begin
First compare the storage listed on your order with the drives Windows can see. A PC might have one SSD, several SSDs, a hard disk or a mixture. There is no reliable rule that Disk 0 is an SSD, Disk 1 is a hard disk or Windows is installed on the smallest drive.
A drive’s advertised capacity and the figure shown in Windows can differ because manufacturers and Windows use different units. For example, 1,000,000,000,000 bytes is about 931 GiB before partitions and files. That reporting difference is not missing hardware. Available free space is smaller again after Windows, games and other files are stored.
If a drive previously held files, do not initialise, format, delete or create partitions to make it visible. “RAW”, “Unallocated” or “Not initialized” can indicate a problem with existing data. Preserve it for diagnosis.
Work through the checks
-
Check capacity and free space separately
Open This PC and note the total and free capacity of each visible volume. Then open Settings → System → Storage to see what is using space. A nearly full C: drive does not prove a second drive is absent. Large game libraries, downloads and update files can consume space quickly. Remove or move known files deliberately; do not delete system folders to reclaim space.
-
Inspect Disk Management without changing it
Right-click Start and open Disk Management. Record each physical disk’s size and the partitions shown below it. A volume is a section of a disk, so several letters can belong to one physical device. Take a full screenshot that includes the lower panel. Cancel any unexpected initialisation prompt until you know the drive is new and empty.
-
Interpret the status
A healthy ordinary data volume without a letter may simply need a letter assigned, after confirming what it contains. EFI and recovery partitions are intentionally not everyday storage and should be left alone. Unallocated space on a genuinely new empty drive can be prepared using the separate storage-upgrade guide. Unallocated space where files used to be is a recovery issue, not a setup opportunity.
-
Check firmware detection if necessary
If the physical drive is absent from Disk Management, record whether it appears in the motherboard’s storage information. SATA and NVMe devices may be listed separately. A drive visible in firmware but not Windows points to a different set of checks from a drive absent in both places. Do not change controller mode or switch random BIOS options simply because a menu lists no SATA devices.
-
Check the connection with support
For a SATA device, there is normally a data cable and a power connection. An M.2 SSD normally connects directly to the motherboard. Use the correct model instructions and disconnect mains power before internal inspection. Cable colours and drive locations vary. Never borrow modular PSU cables from another power supply, and do not repeatedly reseat a damaged or overheating connector.
-
Protect data before further testing
If the drive intermittently appears, copy important files while it is readable and discuss the next step. Clicking, repeated disappearance or a SMART warning needs prompt attention. A failed format or initialisation does not by itself prove a specific component has failed. Avoid long scans and write repairs on a suspect drive with valuable data until a recovery plan has been agreed.
What the results tell you
Healthy volume, no letter
Check that it is an ordinary data volume, then consider assigning an unused letter. Leave hidden system partitions untouched.
Expected files but RAW or unallocated
Stop writes and seek advice. Creating a new volume can overwrite information needed to recover the old one.
Drive absent in BIOS and Windows
Check the model-specific physical connection and slot support. A cable, controller, slot or drive fault may be involved.
Common questions
Does a 1 TB drive need formatting to show 1,000 GB in Windows?
No. Formatting does not remove the decimal-versus-binary capacity difference. Check bytes and the actual partition layout.
Can I combine the free space on two drives?
Moving a game library to another drive is usually simpler than changing storage architecture. Do not convert disks to a combined pool merely to fix a full C: drive.
Is M.2 the same as NVMe?
M.2 describes a physical form factor. A compatible M.2 drive and slot can use different interfaces; check SATA or PCIe/NVMe support in the manuals.
When to contact ElitePCS
Send the order storage specification, a Disk Management screenshot and the model/capacity shown in firmware. Tell us whether the missing drive ever contained important files before accepting any formatting instruction.
Contact ElitePCS support. Include your order number, the exact symptom and the checks you have completed. Keep passwords, licence keys and recovery keys out of screenshots.
