Choosing PC components and upgrades

A good upgrade starts with the PC you already have. Use the category filters to compare computer parts, then check their specifications against your motherboard, case and power supply.

How do I check whether a component will fit my PC?

Check the exact model numbers of your current hardware. For a processor, confirm the motherboard socket, chipset and BIOS support. For a graphics card or cooler, check the case clearance, power requirements and connectors. A matching brand alone does not establish compatibility.

Should I upgrade my graphics card or processor first?

Start with the games or applications you want to improve. Graphics performance is especially relevant at higher resolutions; processor performance can matter more when targeting high frame rates or using demanding applications. Also check memory capacity, cooling and power before choosing an upgrade.

What should I check when buying RAM?

Match the memory generation and module type to your motherboard. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Check the motherboard's supported capacity and memory compatibility list, and use the product specification to compare kit size and speed.

How do I choose between an NVMe SSD, SATA SSD and hard drive?

First confirm the connections your PC supports. M.2 describes a form factor, while NVMe and SATA describe interfaces; the slot must support the drive you choose. An SSD suits operating systems and frequently used games, while a hard drive can provide additional bulk storage. See our storage upgrade guide for preparation and installation checks.
