Reinstall Windows from a USB drive

Prepare official installation media, identify the correct target drive and avoid the common mistakes that cause accidental data loss.

Before you begin

A clean installation is appropriate when you have chosen to rebuild Windows and have secured the files you want to keep. It is a major change: applications, settings and data on the selected installation target can be removed. If you only need startup repair, begin with our recovery guide instead.

You need a working computer to create the installer, an internet connection, a suitable USB drive and your account sign-in details. Record your Windows edition, component models and activation status if the old installation still opens. Save network drivers from the component manufacturer’s site in case the rebuilt PC initially has no connection.

Creating installation media erases the chosen USB drive. Deleting partitions erases access to data on the chosen internal drive. Never select a drive just because an example calls it “Disk 0”.

Work through the checks

  1. Confirm the backup and licence

Open a few important files from your backup on another device to check that the copy is usable. Check locally stored game saves as well as documents and photos. Know whether Windows Home or Pro was licensed; installing the wrong edition can cause activation trouble. Find your encryption recovery key before proceeding. Disconnect the backup drive once the copy is verified so it cannot be chosen accidentally.

  2. Create official media

Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and its installation-media instructions. A USB drive of at least 8 GB is normally required; follow the current tool’s stated capacity. Select that USB drive carefully and allow creation to finish. Do not use a modified Windows image, an activation bundle or a third-party driver pack. If the PC is not eligible for Windows 11, stop and review supported options before installing.

  3. Start from the USB

Connect the prepared installer and use the motherboard’s documented one-time boot menu. The key varies by board, so an F11 or F12 instruction is not universal. Select the UEFI USB entry where appropriate for the system. Prefer this one-time choice over changing multiple firmware settings. If the USB is not listed, recheck the media, the port and the board’s instructions before attempting a firmware change.

  4. Choose repair or installation deliberately

The installer can provide access to recovery tools as well as Windows Setup. Read the option you are selecting. For a clean install, confirm the licence edition and the data-loss acknowledgement. If you have a valid digital licence for the same device and edition, Setup may let you continue without typing a key and activate online later. That does not grant a licence to an unlicensed installation.

  5. Identify the target before partition changes

Match the intended drive by model and capacity with your records. If several drives could match, stop and ask support; a photo of the selection screen is useful. Do not delete EFI, recovery or data partitions on a guessed drive. For a deliberately erased target, Windows Setup can create its required partitions in unallocated space. Do not run a copied DiskPart clean script to bypass uncertainty.

  6. Respond to an installation error

Photograph the full message. A GPT/MBR mismatch, a missing storage-controller driver and an undetected SSD have different solutions. Avoid switching RAID/VMD/AHCI or marking an arbitrary partition active. If media is suspect, recreate it using the official tool. When Windows starts, remove the USB when appropriate, complete setup, install updates and correct drivers, then verify activation and basic stability before restoring everything.

What the results tell you

No drives listed in Setup

The firmware may not detect the drive, or Setup may need the correct storage-controller driver. Do not format another drive to make installation continue.

Setup restarts back at the beginning

Check that the PC is starting the installed Windows entry rather than booting the USB installer again.

Installation fails at different stages

Record the error and timing. Installation media, storage and memory are possible causes; repeating the same destructive procedure is not a diagnosis.

Common questions

Can I keep apps by booting the USB?

A clean installation is different from an in-place repair started inside Windows. Review Microsoft’s current installation choices and their “keep” options before proceeding.

Should I convert every disk to GPT?

No. Windows 11 uses UEFI requirements, but unrelated data disks should not be converted as a troubleshooting ritual. Conversion can be destructive depending on the method.

Will the PC look exactly as it did when delivered?

A generic Microsoft install may not include component utilities, lighting tools or other original applications. Reinstall only the software appropriate to your actual build.

When to contact ElitePCS

Ask us to identify the target drive or storage-controller driver if you are unsure. Include the motherboard model, the exact installation error, the drive list and whether your important files are backed up.

Contact ElitePCS support. Include your order number, the exact symptom and the checks you have completed. Keep passwords, licence keys and recovery keys out of screenshots.
