Graphics drivers and choosing the right GPU

Identify your graphics hardware, install the correct driver and troubleshoot a regression without unnecessary driver removal or power tuning.

Before you begin

The graphics driver allows Windows and games to use the GPU. A driver problem can affect performance, resolution, stability and video output after Windows loads. It is less likely to explain a monitor that never shows the firmware logo. Start with our no-display guide if there is no picture at any stage.

Record the GPU name, Windows version, current driver version and the game or app affected. If the issue began immediately after an update, keep that date. A supported previous version can be a useful comparison; the newest release is not automatically the best diagnostic choice for every regression.

Work through the checks

  1. Identify the hardware accurately

Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Task Manager’s Performance tab can provide another view. More than one adapter may be legitimate on a system with integrated and discrete graphics. If the name conflicts with your order, compare the physical product label and hardware details with support. Do not assume every unusual model name is harmless, and do not flash a graphics BIOS to correct a label.

  2. Download from the manufacturer

Use NVIDIA, AMD or Intel’s official driver page for the exact GPU and operating system. Save work and close games before installing. Avoid download-advert buttons, third-party “driver updater” bundles and repacked installers. A motherboard’s chipset driver is a different package from a graphics driver; removing all software from a vendor can accidentally remove unrelated device support.

  3. Install normally first

Follow the manufacturer’s installer and restart if requested. The display may briefly flicker during installation. Do not interrupt it while it is replacing the driver. Once Windows returns, check the reported version and retry the original game with the same settings. Keep one clear before-and-after comparison instead of changing the game preset, Windows settings and driver simultaneously.

  4. Check which GPU the game uses

Connect the primary gaming monitor to the discrete graphics card when one is fitted. In Windows 11, review Settings → System → Display → Graphics and the affected app’s GPU preference where available. Select the intended adapter and relaunch the game. Do not disable integrated graphics globally just to change one game’s preference; that can affect motherboard display outputs and other applications.

  5. Respond to a driver regression

Check the manufacturer’s release notes and the game’s official support information for the specific symptom. If advised, install a known supported previous driver or use the vendor’s documented clean-install procedure. Save custom settings first because a clean install may reset them. Specialist removal tools should be reserved for a clear need, with a recovery plan, rather than run after every Windows installation.

  6. Retest at standard settings

Disable any recently added tuning profile and test the same scene or benchmark. Do not increase the GPU power limit by a blanket percentage to cure crashes. That can increase load and heat while hiding the real issue. If corruption appears before Windows loads, or the card repeatedly disappears, report that hardware-level evidence instead of endlessly reinstalling the driver.

What the results tell you

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Windows may be using a basic fallback driver. Identify the actual card and install the correct official package.

Only one game fails after an update

Keep the version numbers and check that game’s known issues. A targeted rollback or game patch may be appropriate.

Picture corrupts in firmware too

The operating-system driver is not active at that stage. Investigate the cable, display and hardware with support.

Common questions

Should I remove NVIDIA drivers from every AMD PC?

No. Remove software for a reason supported by the actual hardware and fault. Windows does not require a ritual removal of every other vendor’s drivers.

Does a clean install guarantee the problem is fixed?

No. It is one test. Retest the original symptom and consider hardware, game files and display connections if it remains.

Can I disable the AMD device to fix storage?

Do not confuse an AMD graphics adapter, chipset driver and legacy StoreMI storage software. They do different jobs; changing a storage configuration can affect access to data.

When to contact ElitePCS

Send the GPU model, driver version, Windows build and affected app. A screenshot or short video of corruption, plus whether it occurs before Windows loads, helps us choose the next check.

Contact ElitePCS support. Include your order number, the exact symptom and the checks you have completed. Keep passwords, licence keys and recovery keys out of screenshots.
