Pair Bluetooth devices and fix dropouts

Check that Bluetooth is fitted, pair the intended accessory and isolate missing adapters, connection failures and weak reception.

Before you begin

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are different functions, even when one wireless module provides both. A working Wi-Fi connection does not prove Bluetooth is installed or working. Check your exact PC configuration, then look in Settings → Bluetooth & devices and Device Manager.

Identify how the accessory connects. Some wireless keyboards, mice and headsets use a dedicated USB receiver instead of Bluetooth, or offer both modes. A proprietary receiver cannot necessarily be replaced by a generic Bluetooth dongle. Check the accessory’s mode switch and instructions before attempting to pair it.

Work through the checks

  1. Confirm the adapter is available

If Windows shows no Bluetooth switch, check Device Manager and the order specification. The adapter may be absent, disabled or missing its driver. Install only the appropriate manufacturer driver. For a PC without Bluetooth hardware, choose a Windows-compatible adapter that supports the intended accessory. Do not buy another dongle merely because an unpaired device is not listed.

  2. Prepare the accessory

Charge it or fit fresh batteries and put it in its documented pairing mode. Pairing mode is often different from simply switching it on. Keep it close for the initial test. If it reconnects to a phone or another PC automatically, disconnect it there while pairing. Do not remove a working input device unless you have another way to control the computer.

  3. Add the intended device

Turn Bluetooth on in Windows, choose Add device and select the Bluetooth option. Pick the correct named device and verify any matching code where requested. Follow the accessory instructions if Windows asks you to type a code on a keyboard. Once paired, check the app or sound settings that actually use it; a paired headset still needs to be selected as the output or input.

  4. Retry one pairing cleanly

If the saved pairing is stale, remove that specific device and add it again. Restart the accessory and Windows if needed. Avoid removing every paired device simultaneously, because that destroys useful comparisons. Keep a record of whether Windows can discover the accessory, whether pairing completes and whether the failure only occurs when it begins playing audio or carrying input.

  5. Improve the radio path

Fit the motherboard or adapter antennas if required; some are shared with Wi-Fi. Keep the accessory away from the metal case and compare at short range with a clear path. USB 3 devices and other 2.4 GHz equipment can contribute to interference in some arrangements. A short suitable USB extension for a dongle can be a useful placement comparison without altering the whole network.

  6. Check the adapter and accessory independently

Try the accessory on another compatible device and, if available, another known-working Bluetooth accessory on the PC. Update the relevant adapter driver and accessory firmware using official tools. If a PCIe wireless card provides Wi-Fi but no Bluetooth, check its manual: some designs need an internal USB connection for Bluetooth. Any internal inspection requires mains power disconnected and the correct instructions.

What the results tell you

Bluetooth switch is missing

Confirm installed hardware and the correct driver before troubleshooting pairing.

Pairs but produces no sound

Select it in Windows Sound and the application. Check whether it is connected for the required audio function.

Works nearby but drops at the desk

Investigate antenna placement, obstructions, interference and battery condition. A quoted range is not guaranteed through walls or behind a metal case.

Common questions

Does every gaming PC include Bluetooth?

No. Check the build specification. It may be integrated, added by a card or dongle, or not included.

Can one adapter connect several devices?

Often yes, within its capabilities and the devices’ requirements. Performance and simultaneous functions depend on the actual hardware and profiles.

Should I leave two Bluetooth adapters enabled?

Using overlapping adapters can complicate diagnosis. Identify which adapter Windows and the accessories are using, and follow the manufacturers’ guidance rather than adding hardware blindly.

When to contact ElitePCS

Send the adapter and accessory models, whether the Bluetooth switch is visible and the stage where pairing fails. Include any error message and the result of a short-range or second-device test.
